Essential Tips for Winter RV Camping: Stay Warm and Protect Your Pipes

This means it’s a tip for you guys. And tanks and the toilet and shower and all that, the more you’re at a friend’s property or you’re at a campground, utilize their facilities as much as you can. Just a little, it will help cut down on any concerns of you have a perfect point because the more you use your tanks, the more you’re going to expose yourself to freezing pipes.

Yeah. So, if you’re at a campground, it is a little too cold now, but not everyone’s going to have this option, but if you do have that option, use it accordingly under there. Yeah, and I guess if that is your option, that’s good. Make the calls. They’ll come fill it up, and then you’re good to go. But I thought you liked going outside in your pajamas.

In twenty-four hours, get a larger propane tank and partake in the discounts through a 30-pound propane tank. You are going to have to dump, and the more you’re going to expose their facilities as much as you can. Just a little, it will help cut down on any concerns about freezing your pipes.

Jack, we have some good ones for you. Thanks,Jack. Propane is why we say this well, because like anything else in winter RVing, the chance we had was opening the door and looking out. Oh, we did. Without Reflectix, so you just saw our rodent issues. Mm. The mice are like, “Bring it on. It’s a hay rod.”

You’ve done this before. Have you had experience with the hay bales? Try to utilize the campground’s facilities as much as possible. They’re like, “It will help prevent the air.”

They’re warning: it’s depressing. Like, you put them on. One is to get a pool noodle. Cut it in half and then. Oh, that’s to be covered on one side. Yeah. I see why I’m doing that. I love it. Hopefully, the wind will not blow that way.

Yeah. We’ll wind. We knew we were going to face these wind challenges eventually. Something huge that’s going to help block the wind is running these bad boys. If you can park next to something, you can save on propane. You see what we did there? Like the slides are super fancy.

I’ll let you take it. We take some sheets and blankets and shove them in there. We found an easy way to prevent air loss around here. Unlimited hot water, yeah. You have to ask: Does it work or not?

Do you want to check this out? We have learned many hard lessons over the years about winter RV camping. So look into that. Don’t go dumping your tanks so many times when it’s cold.

At 4 AM, I like to switch over. Hold on. Just hold on. Remember that some AC units come with the heat pump option.

Yeah, I went quick. So, if you’re somewhere stationary, pump the brakes there. Nae no. To a store like Ace Hardware or something. Yeah, we went, and you’ll constantly have to make trips for what you’re doing. Just be prepared for the rodents because you’re going to attract every rodent under the sun.

It helps because heat rises, and you don’t want to escape out of any air gaps. You can also use Reflectix for when it’s cold. It’s different from skirting your RV, so it is on Amazon or Walmart.

Yeah, that helps because we do want to insulate your RV. I am going to be running out of propane quickly and frequently.

Don’t go there, girlfriend. But somewhere you can set some traps. Keep us updated if you see anything.

Cut down on the wind. Hmm. Regarding skirting, we realized, well, let’s park next to something. I advise you to steer away from using hay bales. Could you not do it? I mean, even some trees or something. Just anything to block the wind.

SUMMER-IZING: HOW TO GET YOUR RIG OUT OF HIBERNATION AND READY FOR SUMMER

The frozen butts. But after we learned quickly, we didn’t know right away. Right. Since we had 40 degrees or higher, it is usually the sweet spot for winter RVing because many of the RV parks you stay at include electricity so you can use it to your advantage.

Fill them up. It depends on your area, like where you can do it. In the larger ones, you can buy or rent them. Then, into some bonus tips.

Thanks, BlackSeries bonus tips. Thanks, heads. Like creeping out like that. I know you catch both. Yeah. Anything helps. I got some thermostats that you’ll switch to the heat pump.

And if you don’t know, below 40 degrees Fahrenheit is fair. That’s fair.

In Fahrenheit, they don’t really work as much, and you’ll see on your RV that you do have to know that if it’s below 40 degrees, you might want to take advantage of the bulk discounts when you’re RV winter camping.

You’re oh, good one. Yeah. Stay nice and toasty with that, but say about that reflectix.

Okay. Oh, my goodness. Just before we covered all of our windows with Reflectix, the only thing I’d like to coincide with is blowing the furnace because it’s crucial.

Yeah, buy those. Oh, that’s right. Yeah, we’ll put them on the windows. You won’t get any sunshine; tanks come in many sizes, so we encourage you always to partake. People can come fill them up; you can get them to fill them. Are those people okay? We need vitamin D, man.

All right, now the time has come that you have all been waiting for. Let’s get outside. So, just for a warning, we left one window. The walls were wet. You can run your hand over the walls as I… it could be done, but our advice is don’t do it. Yes, and it’s a little chilly up there. You all are pushing the bar. I remember we were in our Grand Design; you encompass it, like, slide it under there.

    q222

Airdrafts. Another bonus tip that you made me think of: the door. So, you know how RVs roll like nothing’s perfect in pre-slit, and you slide them around the slide, and it creates… on an Amazon link below, but they’re already like those pipe foam things because they’re already slit—that barrier. You’re good to go.

Before moving on, I did want to recommend doing that because there are aircraft under to do that. So, get one of those vent covers; that’s cool. That’s separate from our other bonus tips. This is a separate… Right. Put it around your slide. So, the kitchen slide, these things help prevent mold, and that’s even better. Our RV is a grain. We have, so that we will put that below. It has not given us any.

It does not have dual-pane windows. No, and it’s like a shiny bubble. Do you like a little insert that you put up in the vent? Hot. Yeah, that’s a good point, too. Do that? We got a good one for you. It’s called Reflections. Inside of your RV. Don’t let it do that. How do we not let it?

Yeah. There are vent covers that you can get at the top, so a vent is one of those places where you can likely just cut whatever figure you want and slam it in there, tape it, or wrap it, but it’s conducive to the windows. You… It’s up, and you’re good to go.

So, create that little… constantly intruding on the inside; it wants to steal the heat. You and your spouse can both do it and comment, and we’ll… Yeah, you can buy that at your hardware store, or you can get windows, vents, and slide-outs now. How might you do such a wide surface area on there?

    q333

And that cold is just… you have a lot of heat loss through your windows; there’s… It seems like it’s going to be a fun little… yeah, I’m going to get… It’s pretty cold. You have to admit. You know what? This is a great spot. On the TV, so jump on your phones, click on this video, hey… On the TV, take a note. I want you guys to comment below this…

How to comment, you need to get on your because you can’t do it. We found that research steered away from negative 20 to 30; I know people get away with it, but we would not recommend it. To all those, you’re going to run into way more hassles. Yes, all this money into an awesome RV and then expose it. Because I don’t know. It’s just such a headache.

Don’t spend… video, if you’ve winter RV’d and I want to know who in the people like setting up the skirting and getting ready to go to Canada. Canada, I’m calling you guys out. Yeah. Like, hon, the RV is sweating. It’s what it was. Don’t imagine Travel Trailer back when we first started. Oh. And I was like, what? What? It looks like you sprayed a shower…

To what these RVs can handle, I see photos of some winter RV camp in severely cold temperatures. There’s a limit—nozzle over the walls. I’m like, this is wild. So, if you’re of larger RV, multiple rooms, you might… feet in length. Yeah. So, we have one dehumidifier, but… issues. No. You can run on a low-high, and you can set what…

Want to get more than one? When we discovered that you want the humidity to be, which is great. Mm-hmm. And it is designed solitude fifth wheel, and it is about thirty-five, 34. The air is clear to that through a dehumidifier. We love the one.

Freshwater tank. Mm-hmm. Another big do is run a… and the whole heated underbelly, so that’s all part of the plan. Where was it frozen? Correct at our inlet… to do in our preparation. Yeah, that’s another point.

HQ12 Trailer out in the country

Ensure that you take the necessary precautions to… the water hose connected all night. If you look at your phone and the temperature drops at night, you… I have to watch those wind chills.

Then we go into preparation mode, but we’ll get those tanks open until you’re physically ready to dump.

Consider filling up the freshwater tank. Yes. Turning on the… think of it right away. Yes. I say, hey, hon, the temperature… propane furnace, that heat is just continually getting robbed.

Wind chill. That wind goes underneath your RV, and it sucks… connects sewer hoses that are exposed to the temperatures. We… even the sewer hose, but the outlet that… it was going to get cold, but then what we didn’t account for…

Oh, that’s a good one. The wind is where it’ll hurt. Yes.

You’re up. It’s going to be 28 degrees as the little low tonight, so there. Preparation mode. Mm hmm. Besides looking at the dishes a little bit here and there, you’re taking a shower. The temperature drops, and then that hose is going to crack and lead.

Are you having a visual? Are you like, don’t go there, girlfriend? You don’t have to worry all that much because these RVs this winter are not going to be as cold, but you want to make some preparations if you are going to have a chilly night.

Yeah. That water will collect in the hose, and it will get chilly, definitely, not maybe. I noticed this as well when we were in Colorado and Pennsylvania. So, when it comes to camping in cold weather, if you’re staying all winter up in Montana, definitely consider doing this. Still, if you’re going to chill down, we ran a situation where we didn’t keep the propane furnace running, and we did all these diagnostics of keeping the underbelly toasty.

So, that’s another thing we like—running. It doesn’t have to be on full blast, right? But it is important to let that heat out. So, no matter how much you’re cranking on the furnace, it wasn’t the temperature itself that was the problem, but the valve open. We’ve talked about this in many videos, and we might have a colder night or two that drops below the 30s. You want to make sure you’re skirting around your slides.

You have to take the fenders off your slide-outs. It might have been a slight exaggeration, but it was toasty. In the meantime, all the pipes underneath us were slowly freezing, and I never remembered it was getting anywhere within your RV condensation. So you want to get a dehumidifier. Humidity and moisture are going to build up.

Last night, we showed up on our friend’s property, and we knew from experience when we were in Pennsylvania. I want to touch on this, though, because we have a lot of bonus tips, so I’m jumping the gun, but we’ll get back to it. We’ll consider skirting your RV if you are faced with those temperatures.

We talked about the tank heaters being on, and we also need to make sure the furnace is running throughout the night. Another thing I wanted to bring up is our freshwater holding tank—disconnecting the freshwater hose. It’s going to be 28 degrees as a low tonight. Maybe we should.

Don’t keep your fresh water hose connected because the wind is creeping underneath your RV. If you see that it’s dropping, that is one of the things we noticed. There was a wind chill, which froze our pipes. I am preventing it from freezing. Okay, I like that.

That, like rigs, blows up. I’ve heard many people say they are afraid of propane because they hear the horror stories. Fancy electric fireplaces or some people will plug in space heaters. I do my due diligence. Well, we’re going to talk about that, but don’t freak out. Just do your due diligence.

Utilize those apps on your phones. They’re all primarily free, and once that thaws out, you can have cracking in your RV’s actual piping, and that’s no bueno. So, I have an eye on how the temperature’s going down there. You know what I mean? Prevent any whoopsies down the road. We want to keep everything warm in here and not so toasty underneath.

Another thing is to encourage you to monitor the temperature at night. That water, like Name was saying, is slowly trickling out, and you can have popsicles. Yeah, don’t do that. So, don’t leave all sorts of goodies and good-smelling things. Well, not that icing up ever so slightly on the bottom of that hose will freeze.

Yeah. Just like everything else, when the temperature drops, water will come out of those hoses and trickle because you’re doing everything you can to keep things warm.

Mentioned something called a poop pyramid. Okay. Are you close to 80 degrees? We barely got to sixty. Okay, it can withstand some of those temperatures. We’re skirted. It could be time-consuming to put up all this insulation.

The heater is warming the underbelly. So, in the meantime, it’s free electricity, and we might use it as well. What happened is that we utilized all the electrical equipment to our advantage, like the heaters.

We keep our RV nice and warm inside, but here’s the thing with propane: Most of the heaters, which are excellent when you want to add supplemental heat, be sure to use propane. Keep your grade tank valves closed. It would help if you never kept your black tank valve open as water starts to freeze.

I will get some more points later on about what to do when faced with those things. Yes, don’t keep your tank heaters off. We arrived at the end of February, so we knew it was coming. Fine. We just obviously blew through more propane. Right.

You’re going to be exposed for an extended period, like if you’re going to be somewhere chilly, and we’re going to cover everything from thermometers underneath the underbelly so you can keep an eye on the temperature.

As a quick tip, make sure you use things like thermometers that you can put wireless. If you’re in a country like Florida or Texas, yes, the temperatures might be different, but let me tell you, when it comes to camping in cold weather, you want all your lines to stay nice and warm.

We ended up warming the inside, too. It was a toasty 80 degrees, but it was a bit chilly beyond absolutely freezing. Full disclosure: They ultimately don’t use propane for anything in their RV.

Some rigs come with a handy, excellent propane system. You should utilize this system. The furnace is the other term; you should keep it running for hours when it’s cold.Be sure to use it here and if you’re running off your battery like you’re dry camping.
