Best Off-Road Trailer for Fishing Trips

Fishing trips put a trailer in two awkward places: down a rough access road to water that nobody has improved, and parked for a week where the nearest hookup is an hour away. Add a boat behind the truck, or gear that smells, and the requirements get specific. Here is how the Black Series lineup handles a fishing camp.

The short answer

• Towing a boat too: you cannot tow both at once in most states. Park the trailer at camp and shuttle the boat, or pick a base camp within reach of the ramp.
• Gear that should not live in the kitchen: TH19 or TH22. The garage is the right room for wet waders, a cooler of bait and a fish-cleaning kit.
• Two anglers, long stays: HQ19 for the separate bathroom and the onboard washing machine.
• Family trip with some fishing: HQ17, five berths and a wet bath that does not mind wet people.

The double-tow question

People ask whether they can pull the camper and the boat together. Legally, double-towing is allowed in some western states and prohibited in many others, and the rules on combined length and on which vehicle classes may do it vary enough that the only correct answer is to check every state on your route before you leave. Practically, a 10,000 lb trailer plus a boat is a lot of combination to reverse down a launch road.

The workable pattern is a base camp: park the camper somewhere with room to maneuver, unhitch, and use the truck for the boat. That also means your camper site does not need to be at the water, which usually improves the site.

Why the garage matters more than you would guess

Fishing generates wet, smelly, awkward objects: waders, a landing net, a tackle system that expands to fill any space, a cooler that has held bait and now needs to hold fish. In a travel trailer all of that ends up in the living space or in an exterior locker sized for hoses.

The TH19 and TH22 garages have an aluminum diamond-plate floor and tie-down points, which is to say they are built to be hosed out. Hang waders, keep the cooler in a room that seals, and run a cleaning station on the tailgate rather than at the kitchen sink. The TH22 adds three feet, tandem axles and a full bathroom.

Water and waste on a fish-cleaning trip

Cleaning fish uses water and fills the grey tank quickly, and fish waste must not go into either tank. Every model carries roughly 64 gallons fresh, 26 grey and 26 black, plus a separate triple-filtered drinking supply.

• Clean fish away from the trailer, on a board, with a jug of water rather than the onboard supply.
• Pack out or bury remains according to local rules; never down a drain.
• Watch the grey tank, which fills first when everyone is rinsing hands and gear.

Power for early starts and cold storage

A fishing camp runs a fridge or a chest freezer hard, charges electronics, and gets up before the sun. The standard build is 600W of roof solar with a 200Ah bank on the HQ12 and TH19, 400Ah on the other models, and a 2,000W pure sine inverter. That runs a 12V fridge indefinitely in decent sun. If you plan to run a separate chest freezer for a week, model it honestly with the calculator, and consider the Yellow Stone edition's 800Ah Victron package.

Access roads and boat ramps

The hot-dipped galvanized chassis matters more here than almost anywhere else, because fishing access means water, mud and, on the coast, salt. Galvanizing protects the inside of the frame sections and the weld seams, which is where painted frames rot from within. Rinse the underbody after any salt exposure, and check the maintenance schedule for bearing and brake intervals if you regularly back down wet ramps with the truck.

Tow vehicle
