The Ram 1500 is one of the most common trucks in Black Series driveways, so we get this question every week: which models can it tow safely? The short answer is that a properly equipped 2026 Ram 1500 handles the HQ12 and HQ15 comfortably, and can tow the 10,000-lb-GVWR models only in its highest-rated configurations with careful attention to payload. Here is how to check your own truck.
Ram figures below are the manufacturer's published 2026 maximums as reported by Ram dealers on 15 September 2026. Your truck's real rating is on the door-jamb and glovebox labels and depends on engine, axle ratio, cab, bed, and options. Black Series weights are from the current product pages.
| Model | Dry weight | GVWR | Ram 1500 verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| HQ12 | 5,080 lb | 7,500 lb | Comfortable for most properly equipped Ram 1500s |
| HQ15 | 5,291 lb | 7,000 lb | Comfortable for most properly equipped Ram 1500s |
| HQ17 | 6,000 lb | 10,000 lb | Max-tow configurations only; payload is the limit |
| HQ19 | 6,525 lb | 10,000 lb | Max-tow configurations only; payload is the limit |
| HQ21 | 7,187 lb | 10,000 lb | Marginal; a 2500 is the relaxed choice |
| HQ21 Balcony | 7,247 lb | 10,000 lb | Marginal; a 2500 is the relaxed choice |
| TH19 | 6,172 lb | 10,000 lb | Loaded toy haulers push payload; 2500 recommended |
| TH22 | 6,847 lb | 10,000 lb | Loaded toy haulers push payload; 2500 recommended |
Nobody tows an empty trailer. Water alone is over 500 lb on a full 64-gallon tank, and gear, propane, food, and toys add up fast. Plan around the trailer's GVWR and you will never be surprised at a weigh station. Our GVWR, GCWR, payload, and tongue weight explainer walks through the math.
A 10,000-lb trailer loaded to its GVWR puts roughly 1,000 to 1,300 lb on the hitch (10 to 13 percent). Add a driver, a passenger, a dog, a cooler, and a weight-distribution hitch, and a Ram 1500 with a 1,500-lb payload label is already over. This is why the HQ17, HQ19, and HQ21 are rated "max-tow configurations only" above even though the raw tow rating clears 10,000 lb. The HQ12 and HQ15, at 7,500 and 7,000 lb GVWR, leave several hundred pounds of margin on a typical crew cab.
A 2026 Ram 1500 is a good match for the HQ12 and HQ15. For the HQ17, HQ19, and HQ21 family, the truck can be rated for it, but a Ram 2500 makes the trip relaxed rather than calculated. Not sure where your truck lands? Run the calculator or ask us for a tow-match review with your door-label numbers.
