RV marker lights are small, but they perform an important job. They help other drivers see the outline, width, and position of your travel trailer, especially at night, during rain, or in dusty conditions.
A marker light may stop working because of a burned-out LED, damaged lens, corroded connector, loose wire, blown fuse, or water intrusion. Off-road travel can make these problems more likely because gravel, mud, branches, vibration, and road spray expose exterior lighting to harsh conditions.
RV marker light replacement is often a manageable project when the problem is limited to the light assembly. However, replacing the lamp will not solve a damaged wire, failed ground, or leaking mounting area.
This guide explains how to diagnose a faulty trailer marker light, select the correct replacement, install it safely, seal the mounting area, and test the complete lighting system before your next trip.
Marker lights are exterior lights mounted along the sides, front, or rear of a trailer. They are sometimes called clearance lights, side marker lights, or running lights, depending on their location and function.

Do not assume that a larger lamp is an upgrade. It may not fit the panel, may have a different current draw, or may expose part of the mounting opening.

Do not flood the wiring or spray cleaner directly into the panel opening. If the surface is still damp, wait before continuing.
Place the replacement assembly over the opening without sealant. Check that:
The wires reach without tension
The screw holes line up
The lens faces the correct direction
The housing sits flat
The light does not interfere with trim
The opening is fully covered
The wires do not pinch behind the housing
If the part does not fit correctly, do not enlarge the opening immediately. Confirm that you have the correct replacement.
Reconnect the wires using the correct terminals or sealed connectors. Match the original wiring arrangement and maintain correct polarity where required.
Keep the connection behind the housing or in a protected location. Do not leave an unsealed splice exposed to water, road spray, or mud.
Use heat-shrink connectors where suitable. Allow the connection to cool and seal properly before positioning it behind the light.
Apply a controlled bead of exterior RV sealant around the mounting flange if the original installation was sealed.
Do not cover the lens or fill the entire opening with sealant. The goal is to seal the joint between the light housing and trailer panel while keeping the wiring and lamp serviceable.
Use sealant compatible with the trailer's exterior material. Avoid sealing over wet surfaces or applying new material over loose, dirty sealant.
Set the light in position and install the correct screws. Tighten them evenly until the housing is secure.
Do not overtighten. Excessive force can crack plastic, distort the housing, strip the panel, or squeeze all the sealant out of the joint.
Remove excess sealant carefully according to the product instructions.
Reconnect the trailer to the tow vehicle and turn on the running lights. Check the replacement light from several angles.

The light illuminates steadily
The brightness matches nearby lights
There is no flicker
The housing remains secure
The wire connection does not heat

If the new light remains dark, use this sequence.
Inspect the tow vehicle and trailer lighting fuses. Replace a blown fuse only with the same type and rating.
If the replacement fuse blows again, disconnect the trailer and stop replacing fuses. There may be a short circuit or damaged wire.
Some marker light assemblies use a separate ground wire. Others ground through the mounting hardware or a shared harness.
