Off-Road Toy Haulers: The 2027 Buyer's Guide

An off-road toy hauler is a travel trailer with a rear garage, a loading ramp and tie-downs for dirt bikes, mountain bikes, ATVs or gear, built on an off-road chassis so you can take the toys to the trailhead instead of the campground. This guide covers what to check before you buy one and how the two Black Series toy haulers compare. Figures are from our current product pages, last verified 11 October 2026.

What to check on an off-road toy hauler

  1. Garage size against your machines. Measure your bikes or ATV (length, width at the bars, height) and compare against the garage opening and floor, not the trailer's overall length. Ask for the build sheet dimensions.
  2. Floor and tie-downs. Look for a durable floor and anchor points rated for your load. Black Series garages have an aluminum diamond-plate floor with tie-down points.
  3. Tongue weight. Loading the garage shifts weight to the rear, and an empty garage puts more on the hitch. Both TH models publish a 900 lb dry tongue weight, higher than any HQ travel trailer, so payload matters from the start.
  4. Cargo capacity. Toys are heavy. Subtract the dry weight from the GVWR, then subtract water, gear and options, and see what is left for machines.
  5. Living space after unloading. The best toy haulers stay useful once the garage is empty, with permanent beds rather than fold-downs only. Both TH models sleep six on a queen bed and four bunks.
  6. Off-road running gear. The same rules as any off-road trailer: independent suspension, a rust-protected chassis, off-road tires with spares and an articulating hitch.

Toy hauler or travel trailer?

A toy hauler trades some living space for a garage. If you do not carry motorized toys or bulky gear, a travel trailer gives you more room and a lower tongue weight for the money. If you ride, a toy hauler saves you a second trailer and a second vehicle. More: Toy hauler vs travel trailer · Off-road travel trailer buyer's guide

Towing an off-road toy hauler

Both Black Series toy haulers carry a 10,000 lb GVWR and need a three-quarter-ton truck or larger. At GVWR a 10 to 13 percent tongue weight is 1,000 to 1,300 lb, which a half-ton cannot carry once the cab is loaded.
