RV height clearance is one of those details that feels boring until it suddenly becomes very important. A low bridge, a gas station canopy, a tree limb, a ferry ramp, a tight campground entrance, or a sloped driveway can turn a normal travel day into an expensive mistake if you do not know the real height of your camper.
For off-road travel trailers, height awareness matters even more. You may be towing on forest roads with overhanging branches, entering remote campsites with uneven approaches, or carrying roof-mounted gear such as solar panels, vent covers, antennas, air conditioners, or storage accessories. The number on a spec sheet is useful, but it is only the starting point. The number you need for the road is your actual loaded travel height.

Do not assume the air conditioner is tallest. Check every roof item. Stand back from the side, use a ladder safely if needed, and identify the highest fixed point.

Use a tape measure, a straight board, and a helper if possible. Place the board level across the tallest point and measure down to the ground. If that is difficult, measure the trailer body height and add the roof component height carefully.
Do not use the exact measured number as your clearance limit. Add a buffer for road slope, pavement crowns, suspension movement, tire pressure variation, sign inaccuracy, snow buildup, roof flex, and measurement error.
A practical buffer is at least 6 inches, and more is better when planning routes through older roads, trees, or remote areas.
If your trailer measures 10 feet tall, treat 10 feet 6 inches as the minimum comfort number. For unknown rural bridges or tree-covered roads, give yourself more margin.
