Three-Quarter-Ton Trucks and the Black Series Lineup: F-250, Ram 2500, Silverado 2500 HD

Black Series HQ21 flagship off-road camper, recommended behind a three-quarter-ton truck

Six of the eight Black Series models carry a 10,000-lb GVWR, and our half-ton guides all end the same way: a three-quarter-ton truck makes the trip relaxed instead of calculated. This guide shows why, using the 2026 Ford F-250, Ram 2500, and Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD, and answers the question we hear next: is it too much truck for the HQ12 and HQ15?

Truck figures are the manufacturers' published 2026 maximums as reported by dealers and towing databases on 15 September 2026. Your truck's real rating is on the door-jamb label. Black Series weights are from the current product pages.

2026 three-quarter-ton ratings at a glance

Truck Engines Max conventional towing Max payload
Ford F-250 Super Duty 6.8L gas V8 / 7.3L gas V8 / 6.7L Power Stroke diesel 17,300 / 18,200 / 20,000 lb up to about 4,240 lb (gas engines carry the most)
Ram 2500 6.4L HEMI V8 / 6.7L Cummins diesel up to 17,740 / 20,000 lb up to 3,930 lb (HEMI) or 3,600 lb (Cummins)
Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD 6.6L gas V8 / 6.6L Duramax diesel about 14,500 / up to 20,000 lb up to 3,689 lb

What that means for a 10,000-lb Black Series

Every truck in the table tows the heaviest Black Series with at least 4,500 lb of tow rating to spare, so the rating itself is never the question. The number that changes the experience is payload. A loaded HQ21 or TH22 puts roughly 1,000 to 1,300 lb on the hitch. On a half-ton with a 1,600-lb label, that leaves a few hundred pounds for people and gear. On a three-quarter-ton with 3,600 lb or more, the same trailer leaves over 2,000 lb for the family, the dog, firewood, and a full bed of recovery gear. That margin is what "relaxed" means in practice: no scale anxiety, no leaving the second cooler at home, and brakes, springs, and cooling that were designed for this weight every day.

Model GVWR Est. loaded tongue weight (10 to 13%) Three-quarter-ton verdict
HQ17 10,000 lb 1,000 to 1,300 lb Comfortable on any F-250, Ram 2500, or 2500 HD
HQ19 10,000 lb 1,000 to 1,300 lb Comfortable
HQ21 and HQ21 Balcony 10,000 lb 1,000 to 1,300 lb Comfortable; this is the truck class we recommend
TH19 and TH22 10,000 lb 1,100 to 1,400 lb with a loaded garage Comfortable; toy haulers load the tongue hardest

Gas or diesel?

  • Gas (7.3L Ford, 6.4L HEMI, 6.6L Chevy): the highest payload, lower purchase price, simpler maintenance, and more than enough torque for a 10,000-lb trailer. Our default recommendation for Black Series owners who tow a few times a month.
  • Diesel (6.7L Power Stroke, Cummins, Duramax): better fuel economy under load, exhaust braking on mountain descents, and a calmer feel at altitude. Worth it if you tow long distances through the Rockies or Sierra Nevada regularly, or if you also tow something heavier.

Is a three-quarter-ton too much for the HQ12 or HQ15?

No, but it is more than you need. At 7,500 and 7,000 lb GVWR, the HQ12 and HQ15 are the two models built for half-ton trucks, and a properly equipped F-150, Ram 1500, Silverado, or Sierra 1500 tows them with margin. The trade-off with a heavy-duty truck is a stiffer unloaded ride and higher running cost, not any towing downside.

Setup notes

  • Use the factory integrated brake controller; set gain on a quiet road with the trailer loaded.
  • Confirm the hitch receiver's weight-carrying rating covers your loaded tongue weight; most heavy-duty receivers are rated well above it.
  • A weight-distribution hitch is optional on a three-quarter-ton with a 10,000-lb trailer, and usually not needed; read when to use one.
  • Set tire pressure to the door-label towing spec and check trailer tire pressure cold before every trip.

Bottom line

If you are shopping for an HQ17, HQ19, HQ21, HQ21 Balcony, TH19, or TH22 and you are also shopping for a truck, buy the three-quarter-ton. If you already own a half-ton, read the model-specific guides below, then run your door-label numbers through the calculator before you order.
