The Toyota Sequoia is the full-size SUV that Black Series buyers with families ask about most. With the i-FORCE MAX hybrid it has serious torque and a tow rating over 9,000 lb, but it is still an SUV with an SUV's payload. Here is the honest model-by-model answer.

2026 Toyota Sequoia: the numbers
- Powertrain: 3.4L twin-turbo V6 i-FORCE MAX hybrid on every trim, 437 hp and 583 lb-ft, 10-speed automatic.
- Max towing: 9,520 lb (SR5 2WD). Other trims: SR5 4WD 9,120 lb, Limited 9,300 lb (2WD) or 9,020 lb (4WD), Platinum, 1794 Edition, and TRD Pro about 9,010 to 9,020 lb in 4WD.
- Max payload: up to 1,730 lb, and lower on the heavier trims.

The payload check that decides it
A loaded HQ15 puts roughly 700 to 900 lb on the hitch; a loaded HQ12 about 750 to 975 lb. On a Sequoia with a 1,730-lb payload label, that leaves 750 to 1,000 lb for people and cargo, which works for a couple or a small family with modest gear. On a Platinum or TRD Pro with a lower label and seven people aboard, it does not. Read the Tire and Loading label on the driver's door, subtract everyone in the vehicle, and make sure at least 13 percent of the trailer's loaded weight is left over. Here is the math explained.
Setup notes for towing with a Sequoia
- Use Tow/Haul mode; the hybrid system handles grades well but rear-axle load matters, so run a weight-distribution hitch. Read when to use one.
- A brake controller is required; the Sequoia has a factory-integrated option on trailering-equipped trims.
- Keep the third row and cargo area light on trailer trips; every pound back there comes out of the same payload budget as the tongue.
- Rear air suspension, where fitted, levels the vehicle but does not add payload.
